What has happened to the stock market over the last 12 months (June 2022)?

In this video series, we held a webinar with Hyperion Asset Management. We have taken some of the highlights from that webinar held in June 2022.

In the last 12 months there have been two driving factors that have led to where the stock market is now which has seen stock markets fall greater than 20% from its peak:

  1. Large amount of stimulus that was pumped into the markets is now slowly being unwound. This has equated to roughly $5 trillion being created and passed through global economies (equivalent to the economy of Japan). Because of this, capital allocators have been seeing high short-term earning growth through purchasing low-quality stocks in cyclical-style businesses, as these types of stocks are heavily affected by changes in GDP growth. These types of stocks are usually transitory and artificial, driven by volatile factors such as inflation, and supply chain and labour disruption. They usually don’t last and stimulus is now being wound down.
  2. Large increases in bond yields occurring over a short space of time. We’ve had a 150 basis point move in about 3 months. This type of rapid increase is detrimental to longer-term growth-style investing, as there is an inverse relationship between changes in bond yield and long-duration assets.
